¿Afecta la diabetes a la visión?
Según la OMS (Organización
Mundial de la Salud), la diabetes es una enfermedad crónica que aparece cuando
el páncreas no produce insulina suficiente o cuando el organismo no utiliza
eficazmente la insulina que produce. Actualmente, más de 347 millones de personas
en todo el mundo la sufren. Si no se lleva un tratamiento que ayude a controlar
la enfermedad, tu visión puede ser dañada.
Hay muchas enfermedades de
la vista vinculadas a la diabetes, sin embargo, es importante resaltar que con
un control de la enfermedad y con revisiones periódicas, estas enfermedades no
tienen por qué aparecer. Algunas de ellas son:
· Retinopatía diabética: es la afección más común de
las personas que sufren diabetes y también la principal causa de ceguera si no
se trata a tiempo. Daña los pequeños vasos sanguíneos de la retina. El
tratamiento incluye láser o cirugía con tratamiento continuo.
· Las cataratas: surgen cuando el cristalino se
vuelve opaco debido al paso del tiempo. Este proceso se puede acelerar ante
ciertas enfermedades como la diabetes. El tratamiento quirúrgico es la única
solución eficaz para resolver este problema.
· El glaucoma: ocurre cuando la presión ocular es
muy elevada, lo que daña las fibras que componen el nervio óptico. El
tratamiento pasa por utilizar unas gotas para los ojos y en el peor de los
casos, por la cirugía.
· Edema macular: el síntoma principal es tener
visión borrosa. Esto se debe a la filtración de líquido hacia la zona de la
retina, que es la encargada de suministrar la visión aguda central.
Por otro lado, no podemos
olvidar que la hiperglucemia y los cambios rápidos del nivel de azúcar en la
sangre pueden provocar visión borrosa.
Es importante realizarse
exámenes anuales de la vista y llevar un tratamiento eficaz para la diabetes.
Encontrar y tratar los problemas lo antes posible es esencial en todas las
enfermedades, por eso, debes acudir regularmente al oftalmólogo. No olvides,
además, llevar una dieta adecuada y hacer deporte de manera regular.
